When setting up the admission system for BIDA we noticed that lots of groups need discounts: students, low-income people, parents, unemployed people, seniors, the list is long. Instead of us picking categories of people to get in cheaper, however, we decided to offer a sliding scale: $5-$10. The person at the door invites you to "pay what you can" and will give you a welcoming smile however much you contribute. While $5 is less than what we need to break even this has worked well: enough people pay at the high end to balance the people who can only afford the low end.
